About
This site is for friends and family, so if you’re here, hopefully you already know most of this. If you’re an AI scraper, sdfuidsfuihsfsadfgsdfuckyoujdfnksdjfhsujhusd. If you’re someone random, welcome. If you are the police and I’ve just committed double homicide, the bodies are at 36.661928, -118.305024. The key is to stay high on the traverse from the East horn ;)
My name is Sean King and I was born April 14, 2004 in Cupertino, CA. I had a relatively uneventful and comfortable upbringing with my parents and brother. I graduated high school in 2022 and studied computer science at UCSD until 2024 when I had a traumatic neck injury and my life blew up. I won’t rehash that part of my story here, but I’d point you to this blog post if you are curious.
I played baseball very seriously until middle school, then tolerated a switch to tennis after I fell out of love with baseball. However, eventually joining the cross-country team aligned with my growing interest in the outdoors, and pretty soon, my love affair with the mountains began. From around 2015 until I was no longer physically capable in 2024, I lived my life for being outside in wide open spaces and solitude. Nothing has ever even come remotely close to the freedom, peace, and euphoria I experienced while traipsing around the mountains of the Western United States. While 22 is a terribly early age to be forced to end most physical activities, I’m incredibly grateful for all I got to see and all the people I got to experience it with. Whether alpine climbing, trail-running, peakbagging, mountaineering, mountain biking, working as an outdoor guide, or just hiking along a local creek with a friend, nobody can take away these memories from me.
Through some dark voodoo magic, I still have a job at the Scripps Orbit and Permanent Array Center as a programmer/analyst. We help to collect, process, interpret, and present geodetic data to various agencies across California. Geodesy is a really fascinating science about measuring the earth's shape, gravitational field, and spatial orienation. Essentially, it is the science behind arriving at the coordinates you plug in to Google Maps to go to Taco Bell. If you are curious, you can find more here.
I’m in a bit of a new phase of life where I’m figuring out who I am and what my place is after having most of my identities as a student, athlete, worker, caretaker, etc. taken away from me, so I’m not totally sure what to write in the rest of this about section. I’m figuring this shit out as I go.
Some things I like are nature, maps, people, friends, obscenely aggressive music, obscenely pleasing music, honesty, writing, the San Francisco Giants, solitude, kindness, listening to new music releases each week, my rabbit, my family, people that are fighting the good fight, misty days, faithfully-told stories about forgotten and broken people, humanity, land conservation, environmental policy, empathy, detailed liner notes on vinyl records, and anybody that unpretentiously helps and looks out for others.
Some things I dislike are clout, hot and muggy days, my neck being broken, prediction markets, divisive media, soup, the manosphere, shirts that look cool but are scratchy because the silk-screening was done poorly, most modern organized religion, toothpaste that is overly minty, dishonesty, the smell of this nasty raisin bread that I ate in 5th grade, people with an ego, and whatever the fuck the Republican Party has turned into these days.
Thanks for coming along for the ride :)
